Media and culture go together: Sharmila Faruqui

Posted about 3 mins ago | Karachi, Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Media, Sharmila Faruqui has said that media and culture go together  and a balance should be kept between culture and media. This she said while addressing as chief guest here in a seminar on  Media Portrayal of Pakistani Culture  at Sindh Madressatul Ismal (SMI) University here on Thursday. She said that media should follow religious and cultural ethnic, however, these days some of the media houses were driven by commercialism and sensationalism and this trend must be discouraged.

Picnic party for schoolchildren

Karachi :  : Pakistan Red Crescent Society in collaboration with Karachi Port Trust arranged a picnic party for more than 150 different schoolchildren of the city from KPT to Ketty Bandar by ferry here on Saturday. Vice President of PRCS Sindh Yasin Malik on the occasion said: “Children are our future and we want to provide better facilities to them”. Secretary PRCS Sindh Branch Kanwar Waseem said they arranged such activities and programs to raise awareness.

Strong political will must to cope extortion, law and order problems: Traders

Karachi :   The ongoing menace of target killings and extortionism was direly affecting the trade activities of the metropolis as the traders and the customers fear for their lives while many blamed the political parties for not showing a political will to solve the lingering problem. Chairman All Karachi Tajir Ittehad while talking to PPI said that all parties have taken a  hands-off  approach towards the major issues of Karachi, adding that immense fear exists among the traders as they feel insecure at all times.

71 housing schemes declared illegal

Rawalpindi   On the orders of Punjab government, the Rawalpindi administration has banned 71 illegal housing schemes in Rawal Town and Potohar Town. The concerned authorities warned the public not to purchase land or plot in these unauthorised housing societies because the revenue department would not ‘register’ and ‘transfer’ land in these schemes.

Snakebite cases on rise in Pakistan, says expert

Karachi, Prof Jamal Ara, the head of the National Poison Control Centre (NPCC) at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) has said the total number of patients, including snakebite cases, reported in 2007 was 1,158; 1,257 in 2008; 1,217 in 2009; 2,789 in 2010 and 3,551 cases were reported in 2011. Prof Ara, who is also the author of  Increasing poisoning trend in Pakistan, said that mainly it was due to chemicals and drugs, animal bite, plants, heavy metals, etc. The number of patients reporting at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for poisoning emergency treatment has trebled in the last five years, she added in a statement here Saturday

JI urges media respecting moral codes

Posted about 2 hours ago | Karachi :  Taking serious notice of growing contents of nudity and vulgarity in TV programs and commercials, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Monday urged the electronic media to respect cultural and moral codes of Pakistani nation. JI Karachi Chief Muhammad Hussain Mehanti noted that some sections of media were deliberately trying to malign the Islamic ideology and Pakistani tradition and culture through incorporating vulgarism in commercials, bulletins, plays and other programs

PHC takes suo moto notice of lawyer’s murder in Mardan

PESHAWAR: Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) Dost Muhammad Khan on Monday took suo moto notice of the assassination of a lawyer in Mardan district by unknown armed men and directed the police high-ups to submit all relevant record to the court registrar.   He took notice after the office-bearers of the lawyers’ associations across the province met him at the PHC. They informed the chief justice that the slain lawyer had no enmity and was targeted by some elements due to his professional work
