PR upgrading needs Rs325bn in next five years

PSB Governing Council all set to reverse rebasing exercise

ISLAMABAD: The Governing Council of Pakistan Statistical Bureau (PSB), scheduled to meet on Friday (today), is all set to reverse the rebasing exercise, sources said.   Pakistan’s statistical authorities have finalised plan to come up with the GDP growth figures on the basis of previous system of national accounts (SNA) 1993 on the base year 1999/2000, they said.   The Governing Council will scrutinise both new and old systems and endorse one of them after raising relevant questions in front of the statistical authorities, the sources said.

PML-Functional strongly protests Sindh PPP Ministers attitude, warns to quit coalition government

Excavation at Jamal Garhi ruins unearths new discoveries

PESHAWAR: A team of archaeologists conducting fresh excavation at the ancient ruins in Jamal Garhi in Mardan district made new discoveries in the last two months, experts working on the project said Saturday.   Talking to reporters, Dr Zainul Wahab, professor of Archaeology at the Hazara University and field director of the excavation project at the Jamal Garhi ruins, said they had discovered coins, head of Buddha, five rooms, a sculpture plate and the traces of a lake during the recent excavation and following research analysis.

Barbs exchanged over promotion of Senior Minister’s wife

Karachi,  The proceedings in the Sindh Assembly on Friday were marred when a PML-F lawmaker strongly objected to the elevation of Education Minister s wife as additional education secretary and called it a sheer violation of merit that drew scathing attack from another PPP minister. On a point of order, MPA Syeda Marvi Rashdi drew attention of the house towards recent appointment of Education Minister Pir Mazhar ul Haq s wife as Additional Education Secretary and said a kin of any member of assembly or minister enjoys extra benefits.

Pakistan Steel gets Rs5bn final bailout tranche

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet, on Wednesday, sanctioned Rs5 billion to Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) and asked the finance ministry to provide a government guarantee to the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) for bailing the mill out of its financial crisis   The federal cabinet that met here with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the chair also asked the finance ministry to guarantee that PSM will jack up its production capacity.   It is worth mentioning that these Rs5 billion is the remaining amount of the Rs11 billion bailout package for the PSM, which the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet had approved in December 2011, and in which the finance ministry had already given a letter of comfort (LC) -which is a government’s guarantee- to the NBP for the Rs6 billion bailout amount that had been granted earlier.   “In my briefing today, I requested the federal cabinet to ask the finance ministry to grant the Rs5 billion in ‘one go’ to the steel mills, instead of giving it in small parts, as it will help boost the mills production capacity”, the Secretary of Ministry of Production, Gul Muhammad Rind told The News, after attending the cabinet meeting here.

Need stressed to mainstream Sindh minorities

Karachi :  A  provincial conference on mainstreaming minorities in Sindh  was held at Pakistan Medical Association, Karachi, organized by  National Organization for Working Communities  here on Saturday. Farhat Perveen, Director Now Communities, proposed a charter of Minorities and said that there should be a civil marriage law where couples of different faiths do not have to convert for the purpose of marriage. She also said that 5% quota should be increased to correctly portray the population of minorities.  Employment should be given to minorities too without any discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, color, language and creed , added she
