World Bank agrees in principle to fund Diamer-Bhasha Dam

ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has agreed in principle to fund the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, a senior official at the Ministry of Finance told The News.“The Finance Minister had written a letter to the president of the World Bank seeking funding for the project,” he said.   “The Asian Development Bank (ADB) – the lead financial institution in providing funds for Diamer-Bhahsa dam – had asked the government of Pakistan to arrange more funds from big donors such as World Bank, as it cannot arrange the required funding alone,” the official elaborated.   The Islamic Development Fund and the Kuwait Funds are also ready to provide financing for the project.Earlier, the World Bank had refused to provide financing the project arguing that the site of the project is in the disputed territory

Presidential ordinance on CGT

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has promulgated the much-awaited ordinance, which allows share market investors to keep their source of investment undisclosed till June 30, 2014.   The presidential ordinance, which came into effect on Tuesday and was made public on Wednesday, stated that investors will not be asked about the nature and source of the amount invested in companies listed at local bourses till June 30, 2014. Is Khar set to lose foreign ministry?

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was caught completely unawares when Prime Minister Yusuf Raza expressed in Lahore this Sunday the he hoped ties with India will improve after President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit and that ‘a fresh team’ will carry forward bilateral talks to resolve outstanding issues, including Kashmir. Three Pak PWD officials reinstated, IHC told

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Housing and Works Faisal Saleh Hayat on Thursday tendered an unconditional apology before an Islamabad High Court (IHC) bench in a contempt of court petition.   Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the IHC disposed of the petition after the federal minister told the bench that the court orders had been complied with and three employees of Pak PWD had been restored to their positions.   During hearing on March 20, the IHC bench had observed that the federal minister had not been complying with the court orders

Power subsidy to reach an alarming Rs396bn this year

ISLAMABAD: The tariff differential subsidy (TDS) is feared to increase to an alarmingly level of Rs396 billion during the current fiscal year despite the fact that the power sector has already eaten up over Rs1 trillion under the head of TDS in the last four years, a senior official at the ministry of finance told The News.   Experts said this high level of subsidy will lead to higher budget deficit. “This whopping Rs396 billion subsidy will push up budget deficit to 8 percent of the GDP,” Dr Ashfaq H Khan, dean of the economic department at NUST, told The News
