Gilani claims attaching highest esteem to judiciary

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has made it emphatically clear that the government is not in any mood of confrontation with the judiciary. “We attach highest esteem to the judiciary and since we restored the honourable judges, how could we opt to enter into row with them?” he said on Sunday evening while talking to the media at the PM House. He also ruled out early elections and said that Nawaz Sharif had never raised the question of early polls with him.

ANP calls for review of cabinet expansion

Islamabad   A key PPP ally, Awami National Party (ANP), appears to be annoyed at the fresh inductions of 11 ministers in the federal cabinet, as the nationalist party called for a review of it, saying the cabinet expansion will be a burden on the already under pressure national kitty.   “We understand that the cabinet expansion at a time when the condition of national economy is in a very bad shape is needless and unwise: this should have been avoided,” commented ANP’s central information secretary Senator Muhammad Zahid Khan, when The News approached him for his party’s reaction on the astonishing development.

Imran opposes Nato supply restoration

LAHORE   REJECTING the decision of Nato supply restoration, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Iman Khan has once again demanded the government immediately come out of war on terrorism.   Addressing a crowded women convention at Aiwan e Iqbal here on Saturday, the PTI chairman, showing extreme concern over the loss of 40, 000 Pakistani soldiers and civilians in the combat against terrorism, said, “It is time we must separate ourselves from ‘US slavery’ and the war which has caused tremendous loss to us.”   He said, “Due to this war, we have not only faced terrorism but the menace of sectarianism is also on the rise which is a matter of concern.”   Expressing profound grief over the Shias’ killings, Imran said this was highly condemnable and were perpetrated by the elements who had nothing to do with Islam, Pakistan and humanity.   The women convention was also addressed by the PTI central leaders, including former Punjab Governor Mian Muhammed Azhar, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shafqat Mehmood, Fauzia Kasuri, Saloni Bokhari, Ahsen Rasheed

E&P companies fear potential revenue shortfall

KARACHI: Exploration and production (E&P) companies operating in Pakistan fear likely shortfall in their earnings in 2012 as their cumulative quarterly advance revenue payments plunged by 62 percent in March 2012, sources in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said on Saturday.   “The total advance income tax paid by this sector was Rs3 billion in March 2012 as against average contribution of around Rs8 billion on quarterly basis,” a senior official at the Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU), Karachi said while requesting anonymity

Govt urged to treat Afghan refugees properly

PESHAWAR: Speakers of a seminar here Saturday urged the government to treat Afghan refugees, residing in Pakistan, in accordance with the Pakistani law and international conventions.   The International Labour Organisation (ILO) organised the seminar titled “The Role of Media in Providing Decent Work Opportunities to Afghan Refugees.”   The speakers said it was the responsibility of the government to honour the international conventions and treaties on refugees and migrants.   Pakistan, they said, had allowed 150,000 unskilled Afghan refugees to prolong their stay in the country through an agreement with Afghanistan and UNHCR.

Augmented National Emergency Action Plan being implemented

Rawalpindi   The provincial government is busy implementing augmented National Emergency Action Plan (NEAP) to eradicate polio while union council polio eradication committees are also in the making in the province to make anti-polio drives more effective.   The NEAP was announced by the president of Pakistan last year to combat polio. This year, augmented NEAP is being implemented by the provinces on the advice of the federal government

Police arrest 99 suspects

Posted about 4 mins ago | Karachi :   A total of 99 suspects were apprehended by 14 police stations of South Range in three encounters while recovering arms, ammunitions, drugs and liquor from their possession on Saturday. Among the 99 accused 59 were arrested for creating violence, 20 for pillion riding, 15 for committing dacoities, motorcycle lifting and street crimes and four were apprehended in drug paddling. The police recovered 11 pistols, 11magazines, 60 bullets, looted and snatched valuables, a motorcycle, five bottles liquor from their possession

Suspected Lyari gangster arrested by SIU

Posted about 3 mins ago | KARACHI :   Three suspects were apprehended including a dangerous criminal allegedly involved in Lyari Gang War by Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which recovered arms and ammunition from their possession on Saturday. The unit conducted a raid in Maripur and arrested Safeer S/O Muhammad Hussain while recovered a pistol from his possession. He was allegedly a key member of Rashid Raikha Group while he had also worked with Baba Ladla Gang in 2007.
